You’re looking at the first-ever footage of mating behaviors in oceanic whitetip sharks! 🦈 🦈 We captured this footage during a 2019 expedition to the Bahamas. Scientists from analyzed the video and identified several courtship maneuvers, including parallel swimming, nosing, and biting. In partnership with the Cape Eleuthera Institute, we managed to achieve history, tagging an animal from a submersible (submarine) for the first time EVER. Our objective was this deep-sea #shark, the bluntnose sixgill. This ancient species predates most dinosaurs, and is a dominant predator of the deep sea ecosystem. If megalodon sharks were alive today, how would researchers go about tagging the largest shark to have ever lived? The size of a megalodon would be the main issue, as they were even bigger than whale sharks. Far too big to bring to the surface and tag while alongside a ship.
