While in Arles, Van Gogh painted a drawbridge – something that he was familiar with from the Netherlands. He used distinct diagonals in his composition, inspired by Japanese art. Van Gogh only took a couple of Japanese prints with him to Arles. He no longer needed them as much, as he now viewed the world around him through ‘Japanese eyes’.
