Tootsie, an adorable Northern Saw-whet Owl and Raptor-in-Residence at the Alaska Raptor Center, weighing in at just 3.1 ounces (89 grams)! Despite their small size and nocturnal nature, Northern Saw-whet Owls have a distinctive, piercing call that they repeat multiple times in a row. During the day, they hide in dense vegetation, usually near the trunk of evergreen trees and just above eye level. Last fall at our Owl Banding station in Northern Colorado this Northern Saw-whet Owl gifted not just us, but the world this beautiful owl pellet before taking off.
